Mufti of Singapore
Dr Nazirudin Mohd Nasir is the Mufti of Singapore. He was appointed to the position on March 1, 2020, succeeding Dr Fatris Bakaram.
Dr Nazirudin’s academic background includes a Bachelor’s degree in Shariah from Al-Azhar University, a Master’s degree in comparative and international law from the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London, and a Ph.D in Theology and Religion from the University of Oxford, where he researched the origins of the concept of Abrahamic religions. He also teaches world religions and ethics at the Singapore University of Social Sciences.
As Mufti, he has provided leadership to the Singapore Muslim community, addressing issues such as the COVID-19 pandemic through religious rulings and promoting social responsibility.
His prior roles include contributing to educational and religious policy within the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis). Dr Nazirudin is also a member of the Presidential Council for Religious Harmony and was appointed to the Presidential Council for Minority Rights in February 2024. He is known for integrating Islamic tradition with modern knowledge to offer relevant religious guidance in a multi-cultural context.
