Mufti of Singapore
Dr Nazirudin Mohd Nasir is the current and 4th Mufti of Singapore, a position he has held since 1 March 2020. As the senior religious leader for the Singaporean Muslim community, he also oversees religious and policy development at the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS).
Dr Nazirudin holds an extensive academic portfolio bridging Islamic tradition and modern sciences. He obtained his first degree in Islamic Law from Al-Azhar University in Cairo. He subsequently earned a Master’s in Comparative Law from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, and a PhD in Theology from the University of Oxford, where his research focused on the concept of Abrahamic religions.
Beyond his duties as Mufti, Dr Nazirudin is a member of Singapore’s Presidential Council for Minority Rights and the Presidential Council for Religious Harmony. He is also a member of the National Steering Committee on Racial and Religious Harmony.
Mufti Dr Nazirudin Nasir is recognised for his leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic, guiding the community with contextualised religious rulings, and for his commitment to integrating Islamic tradition with contemporary knowledge to foster social cohesion in a multi-cultural society. In 2022, he received the Imam Al-Qarafi Award for Distinction in Fatwa from the Grand Mufti of Egypt, Dr Shawki Allam, in Cairo, in recognition of his leadership of Singapore’s Fatwa Committee and its outstanding contributions to addressing the COVID-19 pandemic and other contemporary issues.

Dr Ali Hussain is a musician, poet and has a doctoral degree in Islamic Studies from the University of Michigan, Department of Middle Eastern Studies. His research focuses on the image of Prophet Isa (as) in the writings of the Andalusian mystic Muhyi al-Din Ibn al-‘Arabi (qs).
Alongside this academic tract, Dr. Hussain has also studied classical Islam with various prominent Muslim scholars like . In 2013, he studied in Dar al-Mustafa in Tarim, Yemen with his eminence Habib Umar Bin Hafidh, where he studied Qur’an, Hadith and the science of Ihsan. Since 2015, he has also accompanied His Eminence Shaykh Muhammad Hisham Al-Qabbani, and learned from him various Islamic disciplines. His research interests include Islam and Sufism, art and creativity in Islam and the creative engagement that Sufi mystics have with Arabic through the mediation of the Quran.
Dr Ali Hussain was a lecturer in Classical and Qur’anic Arabic at the University of Michigan, and founder of the Adhwaq Centre for Spirituality, Culture and the Arts. He has authored several publications including, “Mystical Musings of a Contemporary Dervish”, “The Souk of Nostalgia: A Childhood Between Rivers and Mountains”, “The Art of Ibn ‘Arabi”, “Art in Memoirs: Setting Forth” and “Rumi and Gibran in Conversation”.

Dr Muhammad Mubarak bin Habib Mohamed is a distinguished scholar with a PhD in Islamic Civilisation and Contemporary Issues from Universiti Brunei Darussalam and a Master of Arts in Islamic Spiritual Culture & Contemporary Society from ISTAC, International Islamic University of Malaysia.
He also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Islamic Psychology from Cambridge Muslim College. He has an extensive teaching background in Singapore’s public schools, having taught and won awards at Temasek and Manjusri Secondary Schools, and lectured at Jamiyah Education Centre in Shar’iyyah Law. Actively involved in community service, he has been a member of the Religious Rehabilitation Group (RRG) Secretariat since 2009, mentoring detainees and guiding their reintegration into society.
He also volunteers with FITRAH and the Singapore Prison Services. A prolific writer, Dr. Mubarak has published works on Islamic intellectual thought and regularly contributes to Muslim.sg. His contributions to education and community service make him a respected figure in Islamic studies.
